Dental Implants in Columbia, MD

You are missing one or more permanent teeth. What do you want to do? Thankfully, people dealing with tooth loss these days have a ton of options. One of the most popular tooth replacement options amongst our Columbia, MD, patients is a dental implant. This artificial tooth root is changing the way we see and experience false teeth.

Perhaps you’ve heard about dental implants before, but you’re not quite sure how they work. Well, you’ve come to the right place. Dr. Chehab has helped adults living in and around Columbia, MD, smile again with dental implants. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone where the missing tooth used to be.

This screw or post will naturally fuse with bone and tissue over the course of several months, while you continue to come into our practice, so we can monitor your progress. To place a dental implant, the patient will need to undergo a couple of minor procedures, so it’s incredibly important that all patients that are getting implants with us are healthy enough to undergo surgery. In some cases, we may need your doctor or a specialist to sign off on your upcoming dental procedure.

Once the implant and jawbone are one fused-together unit, the next step is to place a structure known as an abutment. Just as we prepare and shave down a tooth before placing a crown, an abutment acts like that shaved tooth to support a dental crown. The abutment’s sole job? To connect the implant with the false tooth. If you are getting multiple false teeth with us, then this step may be a bit different.

Some implants will require abutment placement, while other implants may have the abutment already built-in. This is something that you can discuss with our dental team during your consultation to ensure that you are getting the right restoration to fit your needs. Once the false tooth is attached to the abutment, your restoration is complete.

Dental implants are unique from other tooth replacement options, so they also come with a wide range of benefits such as:

  • You’ll look younger now that you have a full smile again
  • Having a full smile will also provide support to the facial muscles to prevent premature sagging
  • Improved speech and restored biting and chewing
  • A false tooth that is strong enough to last a lifetime
  • A tooth that can’t develop a cavity and that doesn’t require specialized care (you can simply brush and floss like you would your natural teeth)
  • A tooth that stays firmly in place and feels just like a real tooth
